Preparing for this winter storm

I’ve got a busy day ahead of me.
I need to fill our bathtub with water, make sure the woodpile is stocked, and gather up all the candles I have sprinkled around the house—because a winter storm is officially en route to the mountains, and apparently…it’s gonna be a big one.
I used to get more nervous for weather events like this. We live up a steep gravel road in Appalachia, and it doesn’t take much for it to become completely impassable.
But then— I got snowed in on the mountain when I was in labor with my daughter.
And a few years later, we lived through Hurricane Helene.
So now I feel a bit like a weather mage…
Except my powers don’t lie in knowing how to prepare (though I’m pretty darn good at that now).
They lie in knowing how to embrace what is—how to be in relationship with the weather (whatever it is), and allow that presence to shake up my perspective.
This is the real magic of “snow days”. The reason we all loved them as kids. They change absolutely everything about our normal expectations of the world.
School is cancelled. Plans go out the window.
The world becomes soft and round as a feather quilt. Or gilded with crystal.
Sound moves slower. Even the light is different—purer, kinder. On a bright day the sun seems to enter the windows of my house like a soul.
When we simply allow the weather that rolls into our life to be what it is, we open a sacred window in which to see things differently.
Our perception itself becomes as transformed as a landscape in snow. And that difference can ultimately allow for so much freedom.
Over the past 14 years of running my own businesses—and guiding thousands of kindred entrepreneurs—I’ve come to understand that businesses have their own weather too: seasons and snowstorms that aren’t problems to fix, but invitations into entirely new ways of seeing.
