The Magic was Never in the Cards

I still remember when I got my first tarot deck.

I wandered into the dark shop along the river, opening the door into the scent of just-burned Nag Champa, hanging like a garland in the air.

The shop was full of all kinds of things—dusty crystals and psychedelic posters and bowls of mood rings—but I was on a quest.

I found the tarot deck—a traditional Rider-Waite deck in a shrink-wrapped box—and brought it to the counter with my saved wad of chore money.

It was one of the most expensive things I’d ever purchased as a fourteen-year-old, and when I brought it home, I decided to make my own case for them.

I found a discarded piece of pink sateen and, with my limited sewing skills, sewed a rudimentary envelope. Newly blessed, I placed my cards on my bedside table and got ready to become the oracle of my dreams.

I assumed I’d consult the cards often—after all, I had access to knowing the future now—but every time I pulled them out… I felt slightly disappointed.

The answers seemed stilted, jumbled, antiquated and not quite resonant.

So I put them on a shelf until they became as dusty as the crystals in the metaphysical shop.

It wasn’t until I got a bit older that I understood that there is a much more alive way of working with the tarot—a way that will bring you into your deepest knowing, and the wildest and wisest parts of yourself.

This week on the podcast, I’m interviewing my brilliant, wise, funny friend Lindsay Mack of Tarot for the Wild Soul.

When I first discovered Lindsay’s work it was like a huge exhale—finally, someone is talking about the tarot in the way I always felt in my soul. Finally, there was a way to work with these cards and unlock the true intuitive magic they hold.

(I felt the same exact way when I read Lindsay’s new book—out next week).

Our conversation felt like the deepest exhale too.

  • “If you’re a lilac, be a lilac”—Lindsay’s rewilding framework for returning to your essential self, free from purity culture’s grip on what “wild” is supposed to mean
  • How to tell the difference between intuition and fear—the specific qualities that distinguish your inner guidance from your brain’s alarm system

I’m curious…

What was your relationship to the tarot or intuition like growing up?

What do you know now that would have been deeply helpful for the little one that you were?

What do you wish you could tell that part of you that was always seeking for answers?

Our intuition—the part of us that knows, that is always guiding us, that is here to help us stay connected to our soul’s path—never leaves us.

It is with you from the time you are born.

It’s with you in the painful times. In uncertainty, upheaval and joy.

It’s with you now, no matter what you are going through.

Because the magic you always sought—whether it was in a dusty metaphysical shop or in the cards you kept by your bedside—has been within you all along.
